Update:
Street Scape:
Thank you all that came and participated in Community Meeting.
Pacific Breeze Concerts at Dinosaur Caves:
The City of Pismo Beach Recreation Department is presenting a concert series to be held at our Shell Beach Dinosaur Caves Park. These concerts will be on Sunday, March 29th, April 19th and May 20th. The Shell Beach Improvement Group is helping sponsor this event, and will be selling Shell Beach t-shirts. We’d like your ideas for a catchy slogan / phrase to be print on the backs of the T-shirts that will be sold by SBIG as a fundraiser at these concerts. We also need a SBIG logo idea for a pocket logo and for SBIG printed business materials. The logo has to have SBIG, Shell Beach Improvement Group, and a “copy-ready” design.
Please e-mail all your ideas to paulmschiro@yahoo.com; we’d love to hear from you. If your submitted phrase / slogan or logo is chosen…a special surprise treat will come your way…
Don’t forgot our next meeting is March 9th at 5:30 pm at the Shell Beach Vet’s Hall on Leeward Avenue…we’d love to have you there. Remember it is about where we live, work, and play…be a part of it all.

Community Meeting: Monday, February 9, 2009 at 6:00 pm
We need the support of the Shell Beach community to finalize the Streetscape Plan for Shell Beach Road. Please attend our Community Meeting, 6:00 pm on February 9th at the Shell Beach Veterans' Building. The purpose of this final workshop for public input before presentation to the Pismo Beach City Council is to decide between two options; one includes traffic calming medians and the other does not. SBIG wants to make sure the plan we present is a community-driven project.
The following project goals were determined at prior Community Workshops:
1. Provide a beach community streetscape that is both pedestrian and bike friendly and helps to slow down traffic.
2. Break up linear appearance down Shell Beach Road.
3. Address parking issues.
4. Include lighting, street fixtures, benches and signage.

SBIG Projects & Streetscape Master Plan
Organized in 2005, Shell Beach Improvement Group has completed the following projects:
~Two solar powered LED traffic/speed indicators on Shell Beach Road
~Improved enforcement of traffic and parking violations
~Signage reducing speed limits on Shell Beach Road
~Resolution of Pismo Beach City Council that approved Rule 20A, Underground Utility Conversion Project on Shell Beach Road, June 2006. Engineering of project is scheduled for 2009.
At the June SBIG meeting, Police Chief Joe Cortez and Officer Jake Miller presented an assessment of community concerns regarding crimes in Shell Beach. The “informal” neighborhood program is working; people are encouraged to “give us a call” (773-2208) to report speeding, parking violations, nuisances, etc.
Here’s what we’re working on:
Shell Beach Road Streetscape Master Plan:
Three community workshops were held to provide public input for a streetscape design between Vista Del Mar and Cliff Avenue . Landscape architects Katie O’Reilly Rogers and David Foote (FIRMA) incorporated project goals into a Streetscape Master Plan that
~Provides a beach community streetscape that is both pedestrian and bike friendly
~Breaks up linear appearance down Shell Beach Road
~Addresses parking issues
~Includes lighting, street fixtures, benches and signage.
Refuse/recycling containers painted in a beach theme by local artists will be strategically placed on Shell Beach Road.
Mutt Mitts to be placed at optimal locations on Shell Beach Road.
Mural on the Post Office building in Shell Beach that was damaged and removed will be painted. Donations given by individual members of SBIG will help to fund this project.

Streetscape Designs Selected at Community Workshop
At the 2nd Shell Beach Road Streetscape Master Plan workshop, consensus was reached to combine two of the alternatives presented by Katie O'Reilly Rogers. This plan focuses on improvements between Vista Del Mar & Cliff Avenue. David Foote (FIRMA) recapped the project goals from the first workshop: to create a beach community streetscape that is pedestrian friendly and provides for bikes; to breakup the linear appearance down Shell Beach Road, and to address parking issues.
Ms. O'Reilly Rogers presented four alternatives and summarized the details of each. After consideration, workshop attendees reached consenus that Plan A, which provides a central median (with plantings) should anchor both ends, and Plan C, which provides a planter strip on the freeway (101) side and angled parking on alternating sides, should be used in the middle section.
The presentation included design options for benches, light fixtures, and entry signage. These decisions will be made as the plan progresses. Mr. Foote and Ms. O'Reilly Rogers felt that one more session should be planned for a SBIG meeting before submission to the Planning Commission and City Council.
