Community Workshop #1

January 23rd ’08,

Wednesday 6:-8:p.m. @ the Vet’s Hall above.

Shell Beach Planning Area Commercial Streetscape Master Plan.

The City Council approved $60K to hire David Foote of FIRMA & Katie O/Reilly Rodgers, consultants, to structure the “Streetscapes” project, develop a budget and explore a “grass roots vision” of the beautification of Shell Beach commercial areas from Vista Del Mar to Cliff Ave.  YOUR INPUT IS REQUESTED @ the meeting. Participants will be broken up into teams, presented with technical data (What is a Master Plan & Specific Plan) and asked to weigh-in on their thoughts. This is the first in a series of workshops (next is March 5th). Our goal is to develop an eventual detailed specific plan for the commercial strip and abutting High Density Residential zone and will include specific recommendations views without power lines, inviting sidewalks, trash cans, lighting and landscaping, parking etc.; that “embodies much of the historic ambiance and flavor of small California beach towns.”   For questions/concerns prior to the meeting, feel free to email sbiginfo@sbcgloba.lnet. Do hop on our website for all the newest updates etc.

…About where you live…

OK, I’ve been a good citizen, used my “Mutt  Mitt” near Vista del Mar, but what do I do with it now????????

Great news! Soon, you will be able to walk to Wawona or Morro and Shell Beach Road, and throw them away in a trashcan! And that newspaper you picked up at Spyglass will be handily tossed in the recycling receptacle too! Heartfelt thanks to two Shell Beach residents & Another. Mike Spangler, Charlene West and John from Statewide Safety and Sign, hauled 14 used trashcans from the landfill east of Santa Maria. This was no small feat, as each of these puppies weighs approximately 400 lbs! This SBIG project will move forward on the plan to introduce them to our commercial area.  These first sets of two and two (trash and recycle) will be located on private property, overseen by the Kreowski family.  The fun part of this project is inviting artists to decorate the aggregate receptacles with an aquatic theme.  If you would like to participate in this project, please email Charlene @sbiginfo@sbcglobal.net.

WE MATTER VILLAGERS!

The “Best In Shell” dog lover gathering for the 4th year at the Dinosaur Caves Park was the brainchild of Clayton Connolly.

What a unique and wonderful event this is for dog lovers, spectators, and all the volunteers who fill the spots of judges, set-up, clean up. The creativity, the laughter, and the growth in participation demonstrate the heart of our Village community.  We thank Clayton for creating this delightful event when he was a relative newcomer to Shell Beach.  You can do the same with your special heartfelt interests and talents. If you would be interested in volunteering to help, send a message to Clayton via our sbiginfo@sbcglobal.net.

Recently, the residents of Seaview hosted another informal event! The first Village Holiday Party was held at the Dinosaur Caves Park on Sunday, December 9th from 1:-4:p.m. The Seaview folks “walked” every street in the Village and hand delivered an invitation for this family event.  Folks were asked to bring their own picnics “and something to share on our Sweets Table”.  We played games, (young and old), posed in front of a “Holiday photo background” for family shots and Villager Tom Grant donated his time and skill as a photographer to record this sunny day of smiles and new acquaintances. To view pictures of this event go to: photosbytomgrant.com/120907.htm. To help with next years Holiday Party, please email Susie @ sbiginfo@sbcglobal.net

…About where you live,work & play…

Two ladies saved the Shell Beach Church.  The Shell beach Community Church at 205 and 217 Windward, on the corner of Windward and pearl is enjoying a new lease on life!  Originally established in 1947 and expanded through the 1960s, the Methodist church was closed in 2006 due to dwindling membership. The Methodist Church then sold the property. During its closure and sale, the fear of demolition aroused a great deal of anguish in the neighborhood and among a number of former members of the congregation.  Much a part of the old Shell Beach community for so many years, the community wanted the buildings saved.

The church complex originally consisted of a little wooden building with a belfry and was moved to Windward in 1947 with the main church added in 1951. The little wooden building is most historically intriguing but nearly overlooked next to the lovely white stucco main church. It was occupied for many years as a residence and was once a one-room schoolhouse as well. Shelly Malcolm and Garin Sinclair purchased the church buildings in 2007 and remodeled the old school house to continue its use as a small residence. The main church is now known as La Perla del Mar and is available for community gatherings, weddings etc.

Please call Shelley @

773-5608 to find out all about this gift to our community from she and Garin.

Other projects in the works looking for your input include a  Neighborhood Watch

program to include pre-designated “safe places” strategically placed throughout our community and clearly marked with a message to anyone, from children to adults—“YOU’RE SAFE HERE!”

Who is SBIG? A group of residents, business owners and community leaders came together at the City of Pismo Beach Community Improvement Group meeting held at the City Council Chambers to discuss what the residents would like to see done with $20K earmarked for improving Shell Beach Road. So many attended this gathering with great ideas, and it was decided that another meeting should be held the very next week to continue the discussion of the ideas and visions “we” had for our Village.  Since that day, it has strengthened, grown and begun identifying projects of importance that need to be addressed. Bring yours to the table too!

…About where you play…

The Mission of the SBIG is to preserve and improve the unique village atmosphere of Shell Beach for the enjoyment of its residents, businesses, and visitors. The group will seek to achieve these goals by making recommendations to the Pismo Beach City Council and by other means.
