Mission

The mission of the Shell Beach Improvement Group is to preserve and improve the unique village atmosphere of Shell Beach for the enjoyment of its residents, businesses, and visitors. The group will seek to achieve these goals by making recommendations to the Pismo Beach City Council and by other means.

SBIG is comprised of residents and business people of Shell Beach.

History

On May 18, 2005 a group of Shell Beach residents, business owners and community leaders came together at the City of Pismo Beach Community Improvement Group meeting held at the City Council Chambers. The City had earmarked $20,000 to improve Shell Beach Road; the purpose of the meeting was to have input from the residents and business owners of Shell Beach.

The group continued to meet, voted on a Board of Directors, and selected the the name Shell Beach Improvement Group, or SBIG. With a strong commitment from the residents, business owners and community leaders, SBIG has become a respected and unified voice in the City of Pismo Beach. SBIG has made great progress with the ideas and visions discussed in those early meetings and has continued to identify and prioritize projects for the on going improvement of Shell Beach.

Since the #1 goal was to establish a Master Plan and Design for the business corridor of Shell Beach, the offices of Firma (David Foote) and Katie O’Reilly Rogers were hired to create the Shell Beach Road Streetscape Master Plan. Two community workshops were held to encourage public input. In August, 2009 the Master Plan Committee presented the plan alternatives, with with the alternative chosen by vote at an SBIG General Meeting, in a letter to the residents of Shell Beach.  Implementation of the Streetscape Plan is contingent upon funding and undergrounding of utilities. Pismo Beach City Council approved Rule 20A, underground Utility Conversion Project in June 2006.

SBIG has sponsored many community events over the years, and continues to sponsor Pacific Breeze Concerts at Dinosaur Caves Park and the Surfin’ Santa Holiday Stroll.
